Point celebrates two staff after graduating from UTG

President Adama Barrow presided as Chancellor and urged graduates to use their education for innovation and job creation. The Point covered the convocation, with headlines like “Barrow urges UTG to link research to policy, jobs at 18th Convocation”. The Point management and staff celebrated Marie Cherry and Mariama Darboe for completing their degree programmes at the University of The Gambia. Marie Ellen Chery earned Telecommunications Master’s degree from the UTG and Mariama Darboe Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the UTG.   The paper celebrates their own staff levelling up their skills. A Master’s in Telecommunications and a Bachelor’s in Journalism is a strong combo for a newspaper too. Pap Saine, the publisher of The Point, applauded the duo for their achievements at the UTG and their contributions to the growth of the paper. Mr Saine’s recognition highlights how The Point values staff development. Having a Master’s in Telecommunications and a Journalism degree on the team definitely helps the paper grow, especially with digital media becoming so important, he said. Baba Hydara, the managing director of the paper, also joined in to congratulate Marie Chery and Mariama Darboe. He praised them for their hard work and dedication to The Point, and framed their UTG achievements as both personal development and a boost for the paper’s growth.  He noted that this is strong recognition from The Point’s leadership. With a Telecommunication Master’s and Journalism degree in-house, they’re well set for digital reporting, data work, and multimedia storytelling. Marie Chery got emotional acknowledging how The Point management supported her while she pursued her Master’s  at the UTG. Balancing work at a daily paper with a demanding master’s program is no small feat, so that backing clearly meant a lot, she said. With Pap Saine and Baba Hydara both celebrating her shows The Point really walks the talk on staff development.  Marie’s skills will add to strengthening the paper even more, especially as newsrooms lean harder into digital and data.
