The St. Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) has joined a worldwide movement to inspire children to become more active, as the island marked five years of World Athletics’ Kids’ Athletics Day with interactive school-based activities aimed at promoting movement, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.

The initiative formed part of a global campaign led by World Athletics, which is aiming to encourage at least 700,000 children to get moving in 2026 under this year’s “Power of Five” theme — celebrating five years of impact, inclusion and community through athletics.
According to the SLAA, the celebrations culminated on May 7 with activities taking place across multiple schools in Saint Lucia, including the Dennery Infant School and the Carmen Rene Memorial School.

On May 6, representatives of the Athletics Association visited Dennery Infant School, where Grade One students participated in movement-based exercises designed to improve coordination, confidence and teamwork. The sessions were conducted alongside Physical Education Teacher Juliana Joseph and featured engaging activities tailored to young learners.

The celebrations continued the following day at Carmen Rene Memorial School, where more than 60 students took part in a series of athletics exercises involving running, jumping, throwing, relays and coordination drills using cones, balls, batons and skipping ropes. Organizers described the atmosphere as energetic and joyful, with students fully immersed in the activities.
President of the St. Lucia Athletics Association, Dora Henry, said the initiative goes beyond sports and serves as an opportunity to inspire children through positive and inclusive experiences.

“Kids’ Athletics Day is a wonderful opportunity to inspire our children to move, play and enjoy athletics in a fun and inclusive environment,” Henry stated. “As we celebrate five years of this global initiative, the St. Lucia Athletics Association remains committed to developing athletics and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate, learn, and grow through sport.”
The Association also extended gratitude to the principals and teachers who partnered with the initiative, including Principal Cyiana Norley-George and P.E. Teacher Dyke Francis of Carmen Rene Memorial School, along with Principal Mary Flavien and P.E. Teacher Juliana Joseph of Dennery Infant School.
The SLAA is encouraging schools, clubs, communities and families across Saint Lucia to continue supporting physical activity and youth engagement through athletics as part of a broader effort to build healthier and more active lifestyles among young people.
