“This Is Graduation” – Dexta Daps Eyes Career-Defining Moment at Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival

Dexta Daps is not treating his upcoming performance at the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival as just another show; he’s calling it a defining moment in his career.

Speaking to the media ahead of Friday’s Caribbean Fusion showcase, the Jamaican star made it clear that this stage represents a new level.

“This is like graduation for me…to be on this stage coming from where I’m coming from,” he said, pointing to the calibre of the lineup as proof of the festival’s growing global significance.

The artist, who has built a reputation for blending dancehall with melodic storytelling, said performing in front of a diverse, multi generational festival audience presents a unique opportunity to elevate his brand.

“It’s the type of audience…every age group. That’s a boost for anybody’s career,” he added.

Daps is set to share the stage with international acts as part of the Fusion night, a platform he believes will push Caribbean music even further globally.

With confidence as his driving force, he says his approach is simple: to create the moment.

“Sometimes it’s just one person you connect with…and then you have everybody,” he said.

According to the Jamaican star, carrying the legacy of dancehall greats is no easy task, but it’s one he’s embracing head-on.

Referencing icons like Bounty Killer and Shabba Ranks, the entertainer admitted the pressure is real.

“The load is heavy…you can’t just get up and say you’re going to be another one of them,” he said.

But instead of shying away, Daps says he channels that pressure into motivation.

“I translate it into a fight…to see how far we can carry it,” he added.

The artist also pointed to the importance of Caribbean recognition, describing accolades from regional bodies as deeply meaningful.

He was recoginized heavily at the Caribbean Music Awards, winning Performer of the Year (Dancehall) in 2024 and leading nominations with eight nods that year. In 2025, he was awarded the first-ever Caribbean R&B Artist of the Year, confirming his status as a major Caribbean music powerhouse.

“To be recognized by the Caribbean…that’s a privilege,” he said.

With the genre evolving, Dexta Daps believes artists must work harder than ever to leave a lasting mark.

On Friday, May 8th, Daps will share the main stage with Skip Marley, the Original Wailers, and Kes the Band along side a Saint Lucian Melange..
