The travelling skater shared his excitement after locals showed up in numbers to support his adventure through South Africa.
Richmond, South Africa (18 May 2026) – After South Africans rallied around American skateboarder Jason Vanporppal following a rough fall on the road, his journey through the country has now delivered another wholesome moment, this time in Richmond.
Jason, who has been skating long distances across Africa while documenting the journey online, recently arrived in the small Karoo town to a surprisingly warm welcome from locals who gathered to cheer him on after following his adventure.
Videos shared online show residents crowding around him as he rolled into town, with people greeting him, asking for high-fives and celebrating the milestone almost like he was arriving at the finish line of a major sporting event.
“Everyone really just showed out right now,” Jason said in one of the clips as supporters surrounded him in excitement.
At one point, children rushed over for high-fives while others welcomed him to Richmond and congratulated him on the journey so far. The moment comes shortly after Jason’s now-viral fall on a South African road, where strangers stepped in to help him recover in the most local way possible.
Now, it seems the support for Jason has only continued growing as he makes his way through different towns and communities along the route.
According to his latest updates, he has since left Richmond and is now heading towards Three Sisters as the journey across South Africa continues.
And somewhere between the long roads, bruises and roadside welcomes, his trip is slowly turning into one of those unexpected internet stories that people simply enjoy following along with.
