*American YouTuber Johnny Somali is heading to prison after a Seoul court handed down a six-month sentence following a string of criminal charges tied to his online activities, CBS News reports.

The sentence stands as one of the harshest consequences handed to a content creator for conduct tied directly to online activities in the country. Born Ramsey Khalid Ismael, the 25-year-old faced a lengthy list of charges, among them business interference and the distribution of sexual deepfake videos.

The Seoul Western District Court pulled no punches in its assessment, finding that Somali showed “severe” disrespect for South Korean law while chasing views and online engagement through provocative public stunts. He was taken into custody after the verdict, with the judges deeming him too great a flight risk to remain free. Prosecutors had originally pushed for three years behind bars. In response, Somali told the court, “I’m remorseful, I’m sorry for my crimes.”

The charges reflected a pattern of calculated chaos across multiple public venues. Somali targeted convenience stores, buses and subway cars throughout the city, as well as an amusement park, harassing both workers and guests. His content, engineered to trigger angry reactions from unsuspecting people, fueled a growing audience drawn to confrontational online entertainment.

In 2024, Somali crossed a line that triggered nationwide outrage when he posted footage of himself kissing the “Statue of Peace,” a memorial honoring women subjected to sexual slavery during World War II. The backlash was swift and severe, leading to a public nuisance charge and a travel ban keeping him in the country. It was unclear whether he was convicted on a charge related to that incident.

Somali’s legal troubles are not limited to South Korea. In 2023, he was arrested in Japan for trespassing at an Osaka construction site and separately fined for disorderly conduct at a local restaurant.
