Blue Water Guards record gains against galamsey – Minister

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has said the government’s Blue Water Guards initiative is yielding positive results in the fight against illegal mining along the country’s rivers and streams.

He said almost every district where the guards had been deployed was recording improvements in water quality.

Mr Buah made the remarks at the graduation ceremony of 452 newly trained guards at the Naval Base at Ezinlibo in the Western Region last Friday.

He described the initiative as one of the government’s strongest responses to illegal mining and the destruction of forests and water bodies.

Mr Buah said the event was not merely ceremonial but a clear demonstration of the country’s resolve to protect its natural resources from the harmful effects of illegal mining.

He reminded the newly trained guards of their responsibilities, which include conducting routine patrols along rivers, monitoring illegal mining activities, identifying and reporting illegal sites, and supporting public education campaigns in affected communities.

The Minister urged the guards to carry out their duties with professionalism, integrity and patriotism.

He also appealed to the public to support efforts to safeguard the country’s water bodies, stressing that the fight against illegal mining should not be left to the government and the Blue Water Guards alone.

The graduation marked the fourth batch of the programme and brought the total number of trained and deployed personnel nationwide to 2,071.

The Blue Water Guards initiative was introduced by the government in March 2025 as part of measures to curb illegal mining activities along rivers and streams.
