To followers of hardcore dancehall music, Michael Buckley is a legend. His husky tone gave the genre one of its enduring anthems, and influenced acts like Bushman.

Approaching his 40th year as a recording artiste, Buckley released his third album in March. ‘Emotions’ is the title of that 13-song set, produced by Carlton “Dilly” McLeod of Stingray Records.

That British company also produced ‘I Know The King’, Buckley’s previous album which came out in 2020. For all the acclaim he gets from his peers, the veteran singer is determined to get his due from the mainstream.

“I want to put a face to the voice, ‘cause it’s been a long time I am doing it. A lot of people know (the) songs that I sing, but never know it’s me. I am working hard for this album to hit as many charts as possible to open a lot more doors,” Buckley said.

The London-based Dilly, who has worked with many A-list acts including Freddie McGregor and Singing Melody, said the objective was to get Buckley to show his versatility on the new project. Which he does on the rocking ‘Prison no Make fi Dog’ and the R&B-influenced ‘Love Emotion’.

“Michael was so prepared, he worked on songs for everyone, from lovers rock to roots-rock reggae. Michael so wanted to please all his fans that he put in a full 100,” said Dilly.

Two of the songs on ‘Emotions’ — ‘Alien Woman’ and ‘Club Conversation’ — were previously released.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Buckley worked with some of Jamaica’s leading producers including Mikey Bennett, Shocking Vibes and Lloyd “King Jammy” James. The latter produced ‘Send Another Sound Come’, the 1989 sound clash killer that remains his signature.

Like James, Buckley is synonymous with Waterhouse, a gritty Kingston community that has produced roots singers like Mykal Rose, Junior Reid, Lacksley Castell and Hugh Mundell. It is also where legendary engineer Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock worked his magic.

With Dilly, Michael Buckley believes has done just that on ‘Emotions’. Produce magic.

”We put in a lot of quality works. The harmonies, the arrangements and effort that we both put in together. I am grateful for others that make it possible,” he said.
