If I were William Kaipa

New Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) chief executive officer, I would pat myself on the back for my bold move to reinstate staff whose haphazard redeployment or demotion led to weakening of  critical operations.

If I were in charge of the State-owned power supplier, I would know that it takes a focused leader to detect and correct such anomalies for the good of the nation struggling with energy poverty, including impoverishing blackouts and delayed connections to the grid.

However, if I were the new broom at Escom, I would also realise the need to implement that through a transparent and independent process.

That said, I would remind myself that I have come at a time when the country is experiencing persistent power challenges which is affecting the country’s economy and all eyes will be on me as the expectation is that the situation will improve.

So, while the reinstatement of effective staff is good, there is a lot more that I need to do to ensure that Escom banishes the ‘blackout all day, every day’ taunts.

If I were the power supplier-in-chief, I would realise that a hell of a task in front of the nation and me is watching.

But I am not engineer Kaipa. I am just a scribe that is Garry.
