By Zoila Palma: A shooting in Midland, Texas this morning left one person dead and at least nine others injured before the suspected gunman died following a standoff with police, according to city officials.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said at least 11 victims were reported in what authorities described as an active shooter incident, ABC reports.
Nine of the victims were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for treatment. Hospital officials said four patients required emergency surgery, while five others were admitted in stable condition. The five patients who were initially listed as stable have since been discharged from the hospital.
Speaking at a news conference, Mayor Blong expressed sympathy for those affected by the tragedy. “I would really ask Midlanders to pray for the families of those who have been impacted, for the victims themselves, for the family of the one who is confirmed deceased,” she said.
Preliminary information from law enforcement indicates the incident stemmed from a traffic stop on Wednesday, when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle but the driver allegedly opened fire on police and fled the scene.
Authorities said the suspect had remained in hiding until today, when officers attempted to apprehend him. During that encounter, the suspect allegedly began shooting at citizens before a standoff with police ended with his death.
