The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas today signed an agreement establishing the privileges and immunities of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission for the general elections scheduled for May 12, 2026. During the ceremony held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, the Permanent Representative of The Bahamas, Chet Neymour, highlighted that “This partnership reflects a shared commitment to the principles of the OAS Charter and the Inter American Democratic Charter.” Ambassador Neymour added that “The Bahamas views this collaboration with the OAS as a meaningful contribution to preserving the integrity and credibility of our democratic process, strengthening public trust, and reinforcing the legitimacy of electoral procedures, systems, and outcomes.” For his part, the OAS Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin, said, “I am convinced that even where elections are well organized and the democratic process takes its course, we can learn from those experiences to improve electoral processes, not only in The Bahamas, but also in other parts of our Americas. Representative democracy is still the best governance model we aspire to, as stated in the OAS Charter.” The Secretary General designated Ambassador Sherry Tross of Saint Kitts and Nevis as Chief of Mission. This will be the fourth time that the OAS has observed an election in The Bahamas, and through this agreement, the OAS reaffirms its commitment to strengthening democracy in the hemisphere by supporting transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral processes in its member states.
