One of Russia’s largest transportation and logistics enterprises, FESCO, is exploring the expansion of its commercial operations within Tanzania.

  • Russian logistics giant FESCO is expanding its commercial operations in Tanzania as part of a broader African presence.
  • FESCO recently completed its first container shipment to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, signaling Moscow's growing economic influence in East Africa.
  • The initial shipment carried plastic goods and industrial parts from Novorossiysk, Russia, passing through India's Nhava Sheva port.
  • The new route takes about 45 days, and return trips will export tea and coffee from Tanzania to Russia, with FESCO distributing goods via its domestic network.

The Russian logistics company is advancing plans to establish a new connection to Tanzania as part of its ongoing global expansion.

This feat seems to be a component of the company's larger plan to increase its presence in Africa.

Last week, it was reported that FESCO had completed its first container shipment to Tanzania's Dar es Salaam port, marking a new milestone in Moscow's expanding economic presence in East Africa.

“Dar es Salaam is one of the fastest-growing container ports in the world,” Alexey Kravchenko, executive director of FESCO Integrated Transport, said in a statement.

He added that the port offers access to wider East African markets and presents “great potential for co-operation with Russian companies.”

The company, which is part of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, disclosed that the shipment included plastic items and industrial spare parts, transported from the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk to Tanzania via India's Nhava Sheva port.

FESCO stated that the route, operated by its FESCO Indian Line West service, has an average transit time of 45 days.

As seen on Maritime Executive, tea and coffee shipments to Novorossiysk will be part of the return trip from Tanzania.

Once there, FESCO's rail and road network can be used to move the containers throughout Russia.

Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov announced during a business summit in Arusha last week that the two nations are currently negotiating a bilateral investment treaty.

This proposed framework aims to establish mutual protections for investments and further facilitate commercial relations between Tanzania and Russia.

“The agreement is on course, primarily focusing on banks so they could realistically assess risks. Implementing the document should significantly reduce risks for our investors,” said Reshatnikov.
