DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Public Bar Association (PBA) has organized the Wakili Marathon aimed at promoting physical exercise in the fight against non-communicable diseases while also expanding access to legal aid services for underprivileged communities.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on May 15, 2026, the association’s Chairperson, Addo November, said the international-standard marathon will take place on May 31, 2026 at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma. He noted that the event’s main objective is to provide legal education and legal aid services to citizens.
November said that more than seven million people have so far benefited from legal aid services through various programs implemented by the association across the country.
He added that, apart from the participation of the Attorney General, Hamza Johari, the event will also feature several athletes to demonstrate its international status, including Alphonce Simbu, the gold medalist at the World Athletics Championships held in Japan.
Explaining the decision to use the marathon as a platform for reaching citizens in need of legal assistance, November said the association had identified land disputes, marital conflicts and other social issues as major challenges facing many Tanzanians during its nationwide outreach programs.
He noted that the marathon will therefore serve as a platform for public education and support in addressing such challenges.

On his part, the marathon legend, Colonel Juma Ikangaa, said the marathon has met all required standards and procedures, urging citizens to participate in large numbers.
Ikangaa also advised the Tanzania Public Bar Association to sustain the initiative, saying that besides providing legal aid services, the marathon could also help athletes achieve their career ambitions.
According to the organizers, 80 percent of the funds raised from the event will be used to strengthen legal aid services in various parts of the country.
