CHOGM 2026 preparations advance steadily

Preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) are continuing to advance steadily, as Antigua and Barbuda moves closer to hosting one of the world’s largest diplomatic gatherings.

During yesterday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant relayed updates from Cabinet, including a presentation from High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill and the Foreign Affairs officials on preparations for the summit.

Merchant said that Cabinet was informed that preparations are progressing across all major operational areas.

“Cabinet was informed that preparations continue to advance steadily across all major areas of planning, logistics, security, transportation, accommodation, protocol and event management.”

Officials said international interest in the meeting remains exceptionally strong, with several delegations already finalising accommodation arrangements and others completing travel plans.

“A significant number of Heads of Government and senior representatives from across the Commonwealth are expected to attend making Antigua and Barbuda the centre of global attention during the summit.”

Locally, interest in the summit is being matched, with residents also showing strong engagement ahead of the event.

“Some 800 individuals have expressed interest in serving as volunteers for the conference, while over 130 delegation liaison officers have already been identified to provide direct support to visiting delegations.”

Officials say the volunteer programme forms a key part of national preparations, with training expected to continue in the coming months as the country ramps up readiness for the summit.
