Everything We Know About The Fourth Wing TV Series So Far

Since landing on bookshelves in May 2023, Fourth Wing — the debut novel in Rebecca Yarros’ The Empyrean series — has taken the world of romantasy to unprecedented heights, catapulting the genre into a global phenomenon. Set in the fictional, highly militarized kingdom of Navarre, the novel charts the perilous, emotionally charged journey of Violet Sorrengail, a scribe-turned-dragonrider, as she navigates her newfound place at the prestigious Basgiath War College. With relentless action, horny high-stakes intrigue, and a generous dose of steam, it’s no surprise that Fourth Wing broke publishing records and established itself as a staple on the New York Times Bestseller list. Since then, Yarros has released two follow-up books in the series — Iron Flame and Onyx Storm — which have only strengthened The Empyrean saga’s chokehold on romantasy fans worldwide. And now, a Michael B. Jordan produced adaptation of the series has been announced. So, with confirmation that Fourth Wing will be filling our screens in the not-so-distant future, here’s everything we know about the TV series so far. What is Fourth Wing about? For the uninitiated, Fourth Wing is the first novel in Rebecca Yarros’ drama-filled romantasy series, The Empyrean. The story follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail as she embarks on her first year at the prestigious and unforgiving Basgiath War College, forced to leave her quiet life as a scribe at her mother’s command. Her mother, a powerful General in the Navarre military, insists Violet follow in her siblings’ footsteps and become a dragon rider — despite her physical fragility (she suffers from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, much like author Rebecca Yarros) and lack of preparation for the brutal demands of the Riders Quadrant. At Basgiath, Violet initially finds protection under the wing of her loyal childhood best friend Dain Aetos, but is soon entangled in a charged enemies-to-lovers dynamic with the brooding and ruthless wing leader, Xaden Riorson. With fierce hand-to-hand combat, daring dragon trials, and danger at every turn, the story blends romance, action, and survival. When will Fourth Wing be released? The TV adaptation of Fourth Wing is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society. At the time of writing, no filming date or release date has been announced, though in an interview with Deadline in January 2026, Jordan confirmed the adaptation is “coming” and at the annual Amazon MGM Studios Upfront presentation in New York City this month, the studio announced the series order for the adaptation. Yarros has also confessed she has already read some versions of the pilot script, a positive indication that the pre-production ball is rolling. Who will be cast in Fourth Wing? It’s too bad Michael B. Jordan himself is about a decade too old to play Xaden himself (we would like to see it!), but with schedules likely still in the pre-production stage, no casting confirmations have been announced. Yarros did, however, make one promise to fans: Xaden will be played by a person of color. Speaking to Variety in November 2023, the author said, “We’re just going to say he’s POC; we’re just going to leave it at that. I didn’t rise to the bait of a lot of those [fan] posts, which I think probably got me some flak, but I knew we were already in development for TV, and I want to make sure that role is open to as much diversity as possible. So I was never going to give the readers my vision because I know that once you give the readers your vision, that’s what they’re gonna stick to. And I wanted to make sure we left it open to as much diversity as possible.” That said, there have been plenty of casting theories flying around social media, as dedicated fans voice their dream picks for who should play protagonist Violet Sorrengail and her love interest, Xaden Riorson. Names including Emilio Sakraya, Belmont Cameli, Mason Gooding Jr., Katie Douglas, and Josh Heuston have been circulating heavily online.
