President of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) Michael Freeland, who was elected Member of Parliament for the St George Constituency in April, will not resign as head of the sporting organisation.
Freeland, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment, however clarified that he will not seek re-election during the body’s next electoral congress constitutionally due in January next year.
“The executive that we have now, we have some things to complete for our final year, and the executive wants to see them through so we’re just going to see them through, and it’s only a few months. To resign for somebody to be the president, and then you have a general election in January, even if somebody steps up from the executive to be the president, it doesn’t give them any leverage to become the president by me resigning now, because it’s only a few months. It’s like five, six months left,” he said.
Freeland, who was elected unopposed as head of the association in March of 2022 revealed the revival of a popular version of the game is high on the agenda going into the final quarter of the year.
“As you can see, we just completed our season, and some of the things that we have on the table to do for the rest of the year is to revitalize the three-on-three basketball tournaments, which Vere [Cornelius] and Keila [Jackson], members of the executive, will spearhead, more or less, because they are involved in the competitions themselves. We have Inga [Francis], who is the treasurer and she handles the management of the national team, and then you have J’nai [Spencer], who’s her assistant,” he said.
Freeland was elected unopposed back in 2022, replacing Kebra Nanton who was elected in 2018 as the body’s first female president.
