Kansas City Nonprofit Surpasses $2 Million Awarded to Black Businesses
In Kansas City, Missouri, nonprofit organization KC G.I.F.T. has reached a major milestone, surpassing $2 million in funding awarded to Black-owned businesses since its founding in 2020.
The organization celebrated the achievement during a public pitch competition, where it distributed $60,000 in grants, including awards of $30,000, $20,000, and $10,000 to local entrepreneurs.
To date, KC G.I.F.T. has awarded approximately $2,039,000 to 86 Black-owned businesses, contributing to the creation of around 151 jobs. Businesses supported by the organization have experienced average revenue growth exceeding 200%.
“This milestone is about far more than a number,” said Brandon Calloway, CEO of KC G.I.F.T. “It represents what is possible when we choose to invest in Black businesses with intention and consistency.”
The organization’s mission focuses on closing the racial wealth gap and reducing poverty-related crime across the Kansas City metro area.
Beyond financial support, KC G.I.F.T. has facilitated more than 10,500 appointments and provided free services to over 3,000 individuals. The initiative is supported by more than 4,000 donors and multiple Kansas City-area foundations.
“What makes this work so powerful is that it is both economic action and social justice in practice,” Calloway said. “As Black-owned businesses grow, they hire more people. This stabilizes families and strengthens communities, leading to safer, more economically vibrant neighborhoods. This is what investing in equity looks like.”
