Retribution Claims Emerge After FBI Raids Virginia Senator’s Office

(AURN News) — Federal agents raided the Portsmouth office of Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas on Tuesday, an African American lawmaker who has spent three decades as one of the most powerful figures in Virginia politics.

The FBI and DEA executed warrants at up to 10 locations, including a cannabis dispensary Lucas co-owns, as part of a corruption and bribery investigation.

Lucas pointed to her recent victory leading Virginia’s redistricting referendum effort, which blocked a Trump-backed congressional map just two weeks ago.

Her supporters say the raids fit a familiar pattern: a high-profile Black Democrat targeted by federal law enforcement under a Republican administration.

Federal sources disputed that characterization, noting the investigation began under the Biden administration.

No charges have been filed. The FBI confirmed the warrants were authorized by a court but declined further comment.

Lucas said in a statement, “I am not backing down, and I will keep fighting for the people of Portsmouth and the Commonwealth of Virginia.”
