*A Walmart location in South Philadelphia is taking a different approach to checkout as retailers continue rethinking the role of self-service lanes. The store has largely transitioned away from self-checkout, relying instead on traditional cashier-operated registers for most shoppers, MARCA reports.

Among Walmart’s five Philadelphia stores, the South Philadelphia site is currently the only one using this setup. The company has kept a small number of self-checkout machines available for Spark drivers handling delivery orders, but most customers are now directed to staffed lanes.

Walmart said the decision was based on the specific needs of that location rather than a companywide policy change. A spokesperson told The Philadelphia Inquirer, “These changes are guided by feedback from associates and customers, local shopping patterns, and the needs of the business in each community.”

The retailer also said the updated checkout arrangement is meant to “improve the checkout experience and enable associates to provide more personalized customer service.” Although self-checkout reductions across the retail industry have often been linked to theft concerns, Walmart did not cite shoplifting as a factor behind the Philadelphia change.

Walmart is also preparing for a broader modernization effort across the country. The company plans to remodel more than 650 stores in 2026, including 32 Pennsylvania locations.

The renovation plans include refreshed layouts, expanded services and upgraded technology intended to improve pickup and delivery speed. Walmart has also said some customers could eventually receive orders within an hour.

Annie Walker, senior vice-president of Walmart’s East Business Unit, said, “By modernizing our stores, we’re making shopping faster, easier, and more convenient, all while empowering our teams to serve customers better and creating local opportunity.”
