Iran has suspended all negotiations and indirect communication with the United States, significantly raising tensions in the Middle East and casting uncertainty over ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the region’s three-month conflict.

The decision, announced on June 1, follows Tehran’s accusation that continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon constitute a breach of ceasefire conditions that Iran considers binding across all fronts of the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the ceasefire framework extends beyond direct US-Iran engagement and includes developments in Lebanon.

“The ceasefire between Iran and the US is unequivocally a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon. Its violation on one front is a violation of the ceasefire on all fronts,” Araghchi said in a statement posted on social media.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Tehran has halted all dialogue and text exchanges being conducted through mediators until its conditions are met. Iranian officials are demanding an immediate cessation of Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from what Tehran describes as occupied Lebanese territory.

In a statement carried by Iranian media, the Foreign Ministry said the “immediate cessation of the Zionist regime’s aggressive and brutal army operations in Gaza and Lebanon and the necessity of the regime’s complete withdrawal from the occupied areas in Lebanon” remain non-negotiable prerequisites for any resumption of talks.

The suspension represents a major setback for diplomatic initiatives that had sought to reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington amid a widening regional conflict involving multiple armed groups and state actors.

Iranian officials have also signaled the possibility of escalating pressure beyond the diplomatic arena. Tehran and allied resistance movements have reportedly placed the closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz on their agenda, alongside potential actions affecting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, two of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.

Any disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have far-reaching consequences for global energy markets, as a significant share of the world’s oil exports passes through the narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf to international markets.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump told NBC News that he had not been informed of Iran’s decision to suspend negotiations. However, he sought to downplay fears of an immediate military escalation, saying the development “doesn’t mean we’re going to go and start dropping bombs all over there.”

Tehran’s move comes amid mounting accusations that Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire arrangement in Lebanon. Iranian officials point to reports indicating that hundreds of ceasefire violations have occurred since the November 2024 truce, resulting in casualties and extensive damage to infrastructure.

The latest development threatens to further complicate diplomatic efforts by regional and international mediators seeking to prevent a wider conflict. Analysts say Iran’s decision reflects a broader strategy of linking diplomatic engagement with developments on the battlefield, underscoring Tehran’s position that any ceasefire agreement must be implemented comprehensively across the region.

With negotiations now suspended and tensions rising around critical maritime routes, attention is likely to shift to whether diplomatic channels can be reopened before the conflict expands into a broader regional confrontation.
