Police are intensifying investigations into a deadly wave of gun violence in Marchand that claimed three lives in less than 24 hours, with senior law enforcement officials warning that ongoing retaliatory attacks among young men are becoming an increasingly dangerous threat to public safety.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Defreitas confirmed that authorities are actively pursuing leads following the triple homicide, which unfolded between Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. “What I can say thus far is that there have been three homicides. We are investigating, the details are still a bit sketchy at this point, but we are on top of it,” Defreitas stated.
The violence erupted on Saturday evening along Marchand Boulevard, where gunfire left two people dead, including a female resident. A male victim who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body was transported to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.
Less than 24 hours later, another shooting in Marchand left a male nursing multiple gunshot wounds. He too was rushed to a medical facility in critical condition but later died.
Investigators are now examining whether Sunday’s killing was a retaliatory attack linked to Saturday’s double homicide, although police have not officially confirmed a direct connection between the incidents.
Defreitas described the killings as targeted acts of violence involving young people attacking each other, a pattern he says continues to place immense pressure on law enforcement. “As it is, these situations are isolated situations where our young people continue to target each other… and it does pose a challenge to law enforcement,” he explained.
The Assistant Commissioner also warned of the potentially devastating consequences when violent confrontations spill into public spaces. “What would make us even more concerning is when the situation plays out in the public and innocent bystanders get involved,” he added.
Police say operations have been intensified in response to the shootings as investigators work to prevent further retaliation and restore calm within the community. “We are getting a grip of the situation and hopefully, at some point, we will see some sort of culmination to these incidents,” Defreitas said.
The latest killings have now pushed Saint Lucia’s homicide count to 31 for the year, reigniting public concern over gun violence and reprisals across communities.
