Uis school gets N$347 000 computer lab

Petrus !Ganeb Secondary School at Uis in the Erongo region has received 20 computers, a printer and essential networking equipment for a computer laboratory from the Swakop Uranium Foundation.

The equipment, valued at N$347 000, aims to bridge technological gaps affecting education – especially in rural areas.

Opening the laboratory at the school on Wednesday, minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp said while the future of education is digital, access to technology remains unequal in rural and remote communities.

She said Swakop Uranium’s support is a significant contribution towards narrowing the digital divide in Namibia, sending a clear message that access to technology is no longer a luxury, but a necessity for effective learning and meaningful participation.

“It is through purposeful partnerships such as this that we are able to bridge that gap and bring meaningful change to the lives of our pupils,” she said.

Steenkamp said the foundation has over the last 10 years committed to supporting computer studies in Namibian schools through its ‘Invest in Education’ campaign.

She said the government has over the past years built new schools, hostels and training facilities aimed at improving access, safety and quality of learning environments.

However, she said infrastructure alone is not enough.

“At the centre of any successful education system is the teacher.

As we expand access to digital tools, we equally strengthen the teaching profession by equipping our educators with the skills, support and continuous professional development necessary to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning,” she said.

“Dear teachers, you are the custodians of this investment.

Your leadership and dedication will ensure this facility becomes a space of innovation, curiosity and meaningful learning.”

Steenkamp urged pupils to embrace the laboratory, use it responsibly, and make it their gateway for opportunities and a space for learning and exploring.

“Let it inspire you to think beyond boundaries and to prepare yourselves with confidence for the future that lies ahead,” she said.
