Who Benefits from Saint Lucia’s Natural Resources? New Policies Aim to Set the Rules

Saint Lucia is moving to strengthen control over how its natural resources and biodiversity are protected, accessed, and potentially commercialized. The latest push comes as governments worldwide face mounting pressure to safeguard ecosystems while ensuring countries benefit fairly from their environmental assets and traditional knowledge.

Against that backdrop, the Government of Saint Lucia, through the Department of Sustainable Development (DSD), in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), convened a national validation session on April 23, 2026, to finalize the country’s National Biodiversity Policy and Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Policy at the Bay Gardens Hotel.

The session, held at the Bay Gardens Hotel, marked what officials described as a critical step toward modernizing Saint Lucia’s environmental framework at a time when global concerns surrounding climate resilience, conservation, and the commercial use of natural resources continue to intensify.

The initiative forms part of the “Strengthening Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Policies and Institutional Frameworks through Demonstrable Models in Saint Lucia” Project, which seeks to improve how the country protects, manages, and benefits from its biodiversity.

Representatives from government agencies, technical institutions, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders participated in the discussions, reviewing the final draft policies before their anticipated implementation.

The proposed Biodiversity Policy is expected to guide national efforts to conserve ecosystems, species, and natural habitats, while the ABS Policy focuses on ensuring that benefits derived from Saint Lucia’s genetic resources and traditional knowledge are shared fairly and sustainably.

Officials say the policies are intended to strengthen environmental governance while creating clearer systems for collaboration, conservation, and responsible resource use.

The validation exercise also signals Saint Lucia’s continued efforts to align with international environmental commitments and sustainable development goals, particularly as small island developing states face mounting environmental and economic pressures linked to climate change and biodiversity loss.
