Angola witchdoctors accused of powering Rhino Poaching in Namibia
The Omusati police regional commander Ismael Basson confirmed that eight rhinos have been killed since January 2026, at the rate of two animals per month

Witchdoctors operating in Angola are being accused of ‘miraculously,’ boosting poaching activities in Namibia and specifically targeting the endangered Rhinos.
Security forces in Namibia report that illegal hunting inside the Etosha National Park has become notorious, with poachers relying on charms sourced in Angola to ‘effectively,’ enter the reserve stealthily and kill wildlife without being detected.
A member of the anti-poaching unit was quoted by The Namibian news outlet as saying some poachers enter the national park in the company of traditional healers to perform rituals believed to offer protection during their illegal hunting rackets.
So far, according to police reports, more than eight rhinos have been killed on the Omusati side of Etosha, which is the country’s flagship national park, within just four months.
And Etosha has always been regarded as an African park with the highest concentration of Rhinos, but now this status is being threatened.
The Omusati police regional commander Ismael Basson confirmed that eight rhinos have been killed since January 2026, at the rate of two animals per month.
Still, Namibia has managed to arrest some 14 suspects, including one witchdoctor from Angola, in connection with the rackets.
And then there is some dark magic being involved. Poachers enter the parks not only with weapons but also a collection of herbs and other traditional charms on their persons.
Illegal hunters believe that in order to safeguard themselves from the long arm of the law, they usually cross into Angola to seek protection from magicians.
“We are also informed that some poachers cross into Angola to consult traditional healers for various forms of rituals before embarking on illegal hunting spree,” a source in Namibia revealed.
The police in the Oshana region of Namibia recently arrested a traditional healer from Okanguati in the Kunene region for allegedly performing protective rituals for poachers before they enter Etosha National Park.
These rituals reportedly aim to shield poachers from wild animal attacks, arrest by law enforcement, and prosecution.
On his part, Police Commander Basson, admitted that there were indeed rumors that the culprits employ ‘juju’ (witchcraft) to shield themselves from rangers and police during their illegal trekking in the Namibian Parks.
“But this is difficult to confirm – at least from my side,” the Police commander maintained.
However, he pointed out that as far as intelligence reports are concerned, Angola provides reliable market outlets for rhino horns in Angola.
“The suspicion is that most of the buyers for wildlife products are based in Angola.”
But poachers are not only dangerous to wildlife. They are becoming a threat to even ordinary people in Namibia.
“These illegal hunters enter the parks with heavy artillery and modern firearms,” said the Police Boss, adding that there have been a series of shootouts between poachers and the anti-poaching units, episodes that can explode into serious battle and result in unrest.
