By Breaking Belize News Staff: Convicted sex offender and police officer Brigilio Ack has had his prison sentence increased from eight months to 18 months after appealing his conviction for sexually assaulting a fellow female officer.

Ack, 40, was initially convicted on August 15, 2025, after a Senior Magistrate found him guilty of sexually assaulting his colleague during a tour of duty in March 2023. The court heard that Ack groped the woman’s breast and kissed her neck without her consent.

Ack later appealed both his conviction and sentence. However, while his appeal against conviction was dismissed, the High Court allowed the appeal against sentence and ultimately imposed a harsher punishment.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim resentenced Ack to one and a half years imprisonment, citing the seriousness of the offense, the abuse of trust involved, and the psychological harm caused to the victim. After deducting 98 days spent in pre-trial detention, Ack was left with 1 year, 2 months and 24 days to serve, effective March 10, 2026.

The court also ordered that Ack undergo mandatory counselling and receive psychiatric or medical treatment appropriate for sex offenders while incarcerated at the Belize Central Prison. Upon release, he must register as a sex offender and notify both the Commissioner of Police and the Ministry of Human Development before changing his residence.

Justice Pilgrim described the harm to the victim as “Category 2 High,” noting evidence presented during trial that the woman was trembling, stressed, shocked, and praying for morning to come after the assault.

The judge also ranked Ack’s conduct as “Level A High” culpability, pointing to his abuse of authority and repeated unwanted sexual advances toward the victim during their shift together.

In delivering sentence, Justice Pilgrim stressed the importance of protecting women’s sexual integrity in the workplace and said a custodial sentence was necessary in the public interest.
